By Rich Murphy I stopped off at the Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge on my way north to Savannah rally. It is about 8 miles east of I-95. I took Cecilia on the 4-mile loop driving trail. Numerous spots to park and take in the wildlife and ponds. The South Newport River in on the north side of the park.

The 2,824 acres of the refuge is one of 7 refuges that are part of the Savannah Coastal Refuges Complex. It was designated a wildlife refuge in 1962. Nearly 240 species of breeding and wintering birds call it home. Species range from dabbling ducks, such as mallards, gadwall, and teal, to diving ducks, such as scaup and ring-necked ducks.

There are 6 hiking and biking trails. There was no charge for entrance on the day I visited. I spent 2 1/2 hours there completing the driving loop and taking one hour to play some guitar under the trees.
